When data is transmitted wirelessly through the airwaves it is in extreme jeopardy of being intercepted and captured. Data is transmitted in small pieces called packets. Data thieves are always trying to retrieve these data packets in order to steal the data. To prevent this theft, the transmissions are encoded by various encryption methods. However, like all technology these encryption schemes are nearly obsolete as soon as they are developed. Older encryption schemes are better than no protection at all, but keeping pace with the state of the art encryption methods is far superior.

How can the airwaves be safer?

In wireless transmissions too, the airwaves themselves are not secure. It is fairly simple for another wireless device to tap into a wireless network’s bandwidth. Often too, these designated airwaves overlap with other wireless networks and these may be completely unrelated, or even competitive. This situation without strict encryption procedures is very dangerous. Access to a wireless network’s transmissions is extremely tempting for data thieves to extract data and also attackers to transmit malicious code back into the network.

Wireless security software can scan the wireless transmissions for suspicious, unauthorized attempts to enter a wireless network and prevent damaging attacks.
