Network Management is All About Diligence
Computer networks are the way business is done today. With them we buy our groceries pay our bills and do our banking. Even our taxes are done on computer networks. Computers all linked together to share information, store and keep our valuable data. They are serious business and require that tight controls be kept on them as they are used. Without managing and controlling the network operation, data can be lost or stolen and this can be very dangerous.
Network management encompasses a huge number of other tasks and responsibilities as well. Depending on the size and scope of a network there are one or more system and network administrators that perform the duties of managing the network. In the realm of these responsibilities the administrator must keep track of all the computers and equipment that are part of the network.
What does the administrator do?
Theft prevention, obsolescence, upgrades and installation of applications for the network users jobs are part of the administrators work and management function. Purchasing and licensing of the software used in the networks is essential. Keeping track of current software and valid software licenses is necessary. The administrator’s management job may entail evaluating the value of the equipment in the network for insurance purposes.
Nowadays wireless laptops and cell phone accounts make remote business possible. The responsibility to keep tabs on those roaming devices is critical too. One of the most crucial and consequential entryways for a malicious attacker is through this off-site technology.
Administrators may also be in charge of configuring old equipment to run more optimally or adding new services to the network like enabling a connection with a vendor’s network for added convenience. In this instance, the risks of an intruder breaking into the network and then being able to access a partner network too add exponentially to the gravity of secure network management and the administrator’s job.
Simplification through software
Network management can be simplified through the use of network software, and many times, an administrator may also utilize the services of a consultant in network management. Overall internal network privacy is also a huge issue. It is also one of the main responsibilities of an administrator. The management of strict security measures is a top priority.
It is hard to say what does get the utmost priority though. When it comes to data loss the administrators must also manage system backups of the data so that work and information are never at risk of having to be recreated or redone. In many cases some things cannot be recreated and this could be a disastrous situation.
In large national or globally based networks, there may be multiple network management teams that are in place throughout the network bases. This is usually under the central direction of an Information Technology department, known as IT dept for short.
Organize yourself
Network management requires a good bit of organization and diligence to keep it all straight. If you ever took your IT department for granted as your computer ran smoothly and you did your work you may want to think again. Network management is what goes on behind the machines that do the work. It is the safety net that keeps the data from being misused.
We are all familiar with swiping our cards at the gas pumps now and checking our bank balances online. Network management is the driving force behind keeping your modern day conveniences running smoothly, as they should. You probably never think about all that is involved in this gigantic task and it is difficult to fathom the complexities of it too. Without the system and network administrators managing the networks computers would be novel but not very useful.
